A 12 Lead ECG investigates the function of the heart's electrical conduction system. During the test, adhesive or suction electrodes, will be positioned on your chest and limbs. Men may require small areas on the chest to be shaved to ensure adequate skin contact.
The test takes approximately 5-10 minutes.
A Medicare Rebate is available for this test.

    Exercise testing

    image of exercise ecg

This test demonstrates how your heart responds to physical exertion and your exercise capacity. Electrodes positioned on the chest are connected to a monitoring unit. You then exercise on a treadmill, with an increase in speed and gradient every 3 minutes. Your heart rate, electrocardiogram and blood pressure will be monitored until we have been able to see how your heart is working at maximum capacity. Your recovery will then be monitored until your heart rate, ECG and blood pressure have returned to normal.
IMPORTANT: Please ask your referring doctor if you should temporarily stop any of your medications before the test.
This test takes about 20 minutes.
A Medicare Rebate is available for this test.

Echocardiography, including transoesophageal echo and stress echo

    image of stress echo

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It provides a visual image that assists with examination of cardiac function. During this procedure, electrodes will be positioned on your chest to record an electrocardiogram, while the cardiac technician uses a hand probe on your chest to take pictures of your heart.
This test takes about 45 minutes.
A Medicare Rebate is available for this test.

    Holter monitoring

    image of holter

A Holter monitor (ambulatory ECG monitor) continuously records the electrical conduction system of the heart for 24 hours. The ECG tracings acquired during the recording are analysed by a cardiologist and a report is forwarded to your referring doctor. Adhesive electrodes will be placed over your chest (see ECG) and connected to a monitor positioned on a waist belt. A cardiac technician will instruct you how to record any symptoms you may experience whilst wearing the monitor. Fitting and removal of this monitor requires two visits 24 hours apart, each between 10 to 20 minutes in duration.
A Medicare Rebate is available for this test.

    Event monitoring

An Event monitor is similar to a Holter monitor, but is worn for a week. It is activated by you to record an ECG during symptomatic events. The ECG tracings acquired are analysed by a cardiologist and a report is forwarded to your referring doctor. Adhesive electrodes will be placed over your chest (see ECG) and connected to a monitor positioned on a waist belt. A cardiac technician will instruct you how to record any symptoms you may experience whilst wearing the monitor. Fitting and removal of this monitor requires two visits one week apart apart, each between 10 to 20 minutes in duration.
A Medicare Rebate is available for this test.

    Ambulatory BP monitoring

    image of ambulatory BP monitor

An ambulatory blood pressure monitor automatically records blood pressure over a 24 hour period. The blood pressure cuff automatically inflates and records your blood pressure at regular hourly intervals. The blood pressure readings are then analysed by a cardiologist and a report is forwarded to your referring doctor. A cardiac technician will instruct you how to record any symptoms you may experience whilst wearing the monitor. Fitting and removal of the monitor requires two visits 24 hours apart, each between 10 to 15 minutes in duration.
A Medicare Rebate is NOTavailable for this test.
