Jay Baumwol

MBBS (Hons) FRACP

 

Dr Jay Baumwol is an expert in the management of heart failure. His areas of interests include cardiomyopathy, advanced heart failure, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac amyloidosis, and echocardiography (including stress echocardiography and trans-oesophageal echocardiography or TOE).

 

Jay graduated medicine with honours from the University of Western Australia. He undertook his general physician and cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney where he also completed a Fellowship in Echocardiography, and further trained in advanced heart failure & cardiac transplantation. He then completed a Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplantation at Toronto General Hospital, Canada, and also undertook further echocardiography training at Mount Sinai Hospital and Toronto General Hospital, Canada.

 

Dr Baumwol is a Consultant Cardiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital and St John of God Murdoch. He is a member of the West Australian Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Service at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He has presented at international conferences and is an active participant in clinical research.

 

His approach to clinical care prioritises his patients’ understanding of their condition, treatment options and management plan. He currently consults from our Murdoch and Rockingham rooms.

Matthew Best

MB BS (UWA) FRACP

 

Dr Matthew Best has been a consultant since 2005. He is an expert in general cardiology, heart failure/cardiomyopathy, advanced heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. His field of expertise is heart failure and the management of patients with advanced heart failure – including those needing cardiac transplantation.

 

Matthew graduated medicine from the University of Western Australia. He completed physician and general cardiology training at Royal Perth Hospital and Hollywood Private Hospital. He was the first cardiologist in Western Australia to return after completing a dedicated international Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation from Papworth Hospital in England, and has worked in a number of international cardiac transplant units.

 

Dr Best is a Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Perth Hospital, The Mount Hospital and Hollywood Hospital. He is a member of the WA Advisory Board for the Heart Foundation, the RACP Advanced Training Committee in Cardiology and the Medical Advisory Committee at The Mount Hospital.

 

His approach to patient care is one of up-to-date best practice care, educating and empowering patients to participate in their health care in order to achieve optimal outcomes. He currently consults from our Nedlands, St James and Perth (Mount Medical Centre) rooms.

Michael Davis

MB BS (UWA) FRACP FACC FCSANZ

Consultant cardiologist at Nedlands, Perth (Mount Medical Centre) and Esperance

 

Dr Michael Davis is a cardiac electrophysiologist, a pioneer in catheter ablation providing expertise in arrhythmia management, pacing, catheter ablation and implantable defibrillator use. He is also experienced in general cardiology, echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation.

 

Dr Davis graduated medicine from the University of Western Australia. He trained in cardiology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital. He then completed sub-specialty cardiac electrophysiology training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA.

 

Dr Davis is a Consultant Cardiologist at Hollywood Specialist Centre. He is an emeritus consultant at Royal Perth Hospital where he worked from 1985 until 2008. He has also taught as a visiting Professor at Beijing Hospital in China and Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California, USA. As well as his metropolitan practice, he provides visiting cardiology services to the Esperance region.

 

He currently consults from our Nedlands, Perth (Mount Medical Centre) and Esperance rooms.

Andrew Epstein

DPhil (Oxon) FRCP(UK) FRACP

 

Dr Epstein is an experienced general cardiologist with special expertise in complex coronary intervention. Andrew worked as a consultant cardiologist in the UK for 14 years both in district general and tertiary settings, before moving to Perth in 2022. He then spent a year with the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital to further broaden his experience.

 

Graduating in medicine from the University of Nottingham in the UK, Dr Epstein completed his PhD in molecular biology at Oxford University. He completed his specialist training at the now Royal Papworth Hospital in coronary intervention, pacing and heart failure before undertaking an international clinical fellowship in Coronary Intervention in Bergen, Norway. Andrew’s main interest is in coronary artery disease and complex PCI. In 2015 he set up and developed a CTO service in Worcester, UK. In addition to coronary intervention, he is experienced in a wide range of general cardiology heart conditions including valvular heart disease, heart failure and heart rhythm disorders.

 

Andrew has a passion for teaching medical students and doctors and also clinical nurse practitioners and has won teaching awards for this.

 

Dr Epstein will be conducting clinics in St James, Midland and Rockingham and will conduct regular regional clinics in Esperance.

Balvinder Handa

MBBS BSc MRCP FRACP PhD

Consultant cardiologist at St James and Midland.

 

Dr Balvinder Handa is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist. He is an expert in management of heart rhythm disorders and cardiac devices. His areas of expertise include catheter ablation of a range of arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, implantation of cardiac devices (pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices), lead extractions and complex vascular access / venoplasty. He is also experienced in general cardiology, echocardiography, and in diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions.

 

Dr Handa undertook his undergraduate medical training and later PhD at Imperial College London, UK. He completed his general cardiology training and a 3-year fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Devices at Hammersmith Hospital, part of the renowned Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He has a strong interest in clinical research and medical education. He has authored a number of research articles, book chapters, a clinical patent and has received a number of high-profile international awards for his research. Dr Handa relocated to Perth shortly after qualifying as a consultant in the UK and currently also works as a Consultant Cardiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

 

Dr. Handa is focused on delivering patient-centred care that is based on up-to-date evidence. He currently consults from our St James and Midland rooms.

Athula Karu

MB BS Hons (Syd) FRACP

Dr Athula Karu is an expert in general cardiology including the assessment and management of chest pain, hypertension, assessment of arrhythmias and preventative cardiology. His fields of expertise are echocardiography (including stress and transoesophageal echocardiography), perioperative cardiac assessment and management of high risk perioperative cardiac care.

Athula graduated medicine with honours from the University of Sydney faculty of Medicine. He spent a research term at Kings College Hospital with further two years of full time research in vascular medicine at the University of New South Wales. He was the recipient of prestigious Sir Roy McCaughey research fellowship for three years during his research. He completed his Physician training at Sir Charles Gardner Hospital and then Cardiology Advanced Training at Royal Perth Hospital.

 

Athula is a Consultant Cardiologist at Joondalup Health Campus, the Mount Hospital, and Hollywood Specialist Centre. He is also the Director of Physician Education in Medicine and a visiting consultant at the high risk perioperative cardiac assessment clinic at the Royal Perth Hospital.

In addition to his enjoyment of training aspiring junior doctors and physicians, Dr Karu plays an active role in raising public awareness in cardiac health issues. This includes taking time out to participate in a health discussion forum on Curtin FM 100.1 public radio station. 

 

He currently consults from our rooms in Joondalup, Perth (Mount Medical Centre) and Nedlands (Hollywood Specialist Centre).

Susan Kuruvilla

MBBS FRACP FACC FCSANZ

Consultant Cardiologist at Joondalup, Nedlands, and Perth (Mount Medical Centre)

 

Dr Susan Kuruvilla is an expert in general cardiology, heart failure, hypertension and chest pain. She has particular interest in women’s and geriatric cardiovascular care. Her fields of expertise include management of acute chest pain, long term care of ischaemic heart disease (including risk factor modification), medical management of arrhythmias, monitoring of valvular heart disease, heart failure, hypertension and other general cardiology issues. She is available for the assessment and management of perioperative cardiovascular issues such as cardiovascular risk assessment, anticoagulation and antiplatelet management and management of perioperative issues like atrial fibrillation, heart failure and acute coronary syndromes.

 

Susan completed her physician’s training in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She then completed her General Cardiology advanced training at Royal Perth Hospital and Hollywood Private Hospital.

 

Dr Kuruvilla is a consultant cardiologist at Hollywood Specialist Centre and Joondalup Health Campus. Her investigation expertise includes stress testing, holter monitoring, echocardiography, and angiographic assessment for patients.

 

She currently consults from our Joondalup, Nedlands and Perth (Mount Medical Centre) rooms.

Michael Muhlmann

MB BS FRACP

Dr Michael Muhlmann is an Interventional and Structural Cardiologist with a particular interest in coronary stenting via radial access, TAVI and balloon valvuloplasty and percutaneous closure of PFO, ASD and LAA. He also has experience in general cardiology, heart failure and echo.

 

Dr Muhlmann graduated from the University of Western Australia. He trained in Cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital and the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He then completed sub-specialty interventional training at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and interventional and structural training at London Chest Hospital in East London.

 

Dr Muhlmann was appointed to SCGH in2006 as a Visiting Medical Officer. He has been Head of Department SCGH since 2019.

 

Dr Muhlmann consults from our Nedlands, Mt Lawley and Perth rooms. He is accredited at Hollywood Hospital, Mount Hospital and SJOG Subiaco.

Mary Nangrahary

MD MSc FRACP

Consultant Cardiologist

 

Dr Nangrahary is a passionate Consultant Cardiologist, General and Obstetric Physician with a special interest in complex care patients, women’s health, cardiac disease in pregnancy and heart failure and lipid disorders.

 

After completion of her medical degree in the Netherlands, she specialised in Cardiology and General Medicine in Western Australia. She undertook her fellowship in Echocardiography at Fiona Stanley Hospital, took a keen interest in heart failure and led the Heart Failure Clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). She further specialised in Obstetric Medicine and Cardiology at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH).

 

Her public work is carried out at SCGH and KEMH, and she undertakes the bulk of her private work at Mount Hospital, performing elective and procedural transesophageal echocardiograms (TOEs) and angiograms.

 

Mary is passionate about teaching and research and is a clinical guest lecturer at Faculty of Medicine University of Western Australia. She is the Chief Investigator in clinical trial “Pre-eclampsia and Cardiac dysfunction in Diabetic Pregnancy” at KEMH.

 

Dr Nangrahary specialises in comprehensive management of common and complex cardiac conditions as well as diagnostic testing, treatment for patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions and delivering personalised, high-quality cardiac care to patients with cardiac conditions.

 

Dr Nangrahary sees a wide range of heart conditions including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, structural heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, heart rhythm disorders, lipid disorders and high blood pressure.

Anne Powell

MB BS (Melbourne) PhD FRACP FCSANZ

Dr Anne Powell is an expert in the insertion and management of pacemakers, and implantable defibrillators and cardiac ablation. Her field of expertise is electrophysiology and the management of cardiac arrhythmias including interventional electrophysiology.


She trained in medicine and cardiology and has a PhD from the University of Melbourne. She completed her Fellowship in Electrophysiology in Boston, USA.


Anne is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Perth Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and Hollywood Specialist Centre, and teaches medical students as an Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia.

She currently consults from our Nedlands and Perth (Mount Medical Centre) rooms.

Jamie Rankin

Consultant Cardiologist at Murdoch, Rockingham and Perth (Mount Medical Centre)

 

Dr Jamie Rankin is an expert in general cardiology, echocardiography, structural heart intervention and acute coronary syndromes. His sub-specialty is interventional cardiology and his key interests include clinical epidemiology, structural heart intervention and acute coronary syndromes, with an ongoing dedication to clinical research at both a national and international level. He also has a strong interest in aboriginal health, and regularly travels to the Ngaanyatjarra Lands to provide visiting cardiology services.

 

Jamie graduated medicine from the University of Western Australia. He trained in cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital. He then completed his Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Vancouver General Hospital, Canada.

 

Dr Rankin has held the position of Head of Cardiology at Fiona Stanley Hospital since it opened in 2014, having previously held the roles of Head of Cardiology and Director of Clinical Trials in Cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital. His commitment to excellence in our health system sees him consulting on a number of government advisory groups.

Sharad Shetty

MB BS MD FRACP

Consultant Cardiologist at Murdoch and Perth (Mount Medical Centre)

 

Dr Sharad Shetty is an expert in general cardiology, chest pain and coronary artery disease. He is an interventional cardiologist whose key interests include coronary angioplasty/stenting, renal denervation, renal artery stenting and valvuloplasty.

 

Sharad trained in Interventional Cardiology at the Royal Perth and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. He then completed a Fellowship in Vascular and Cardiac Interventions at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. This training included interventional treatment of renal artery stenosis and lower extremity claudication.

 

Dr Shetty is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital and St John of God Murdoch and is the Director of Cardiology Training at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Dr Shetty performed the first renal denervation procedure for uncontrolled blood pressure in WA and has proctored and trained other cardiologists, locally and internationally, in this procedure. He also performed the first case in the world using the TIVUS ultrasound based renal denervation system.

 

Dr Shetty is actively involved in significant research in the area of cutting edge technologies and is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences. He currently consults from our Murdoch and Perth (Mount Medical Centre) rooms.

Nik Stoyanov

Consultant Cardiologist at Murdoch, Midland and Perth (Mount Medical Centre)

Dr Nik Stoyanov is a Cardiologist with subspecialty training in Electrophysiology, Pacing and Heart Failure.

Nik is a local graduate from UWA, and has completed Cardiology training at Royal Perth Hospital, including 12 months at the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Unit. Subsequently, he spent a further 3 years training in EP and Pacing at RPH and at the Ottawa Heart Institute, Ontario, Canada.

Dr Stoyanov is a consultant cardiologist practicing in public (Royal Perth Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital) and private (St John of God Murdoch). Aside from General Cardiology, his particular areas of interest include management of all cardiac arrhythmias, implantation and follow-up of pacemakers and defibrillators, and the management of inherited cardiac conditions.

Harveen Kuppusamy

Consultant Cardiologist at Murdoch and Perth (Mount Medical Centre).

 

Dr Kuppusamy is a Cardiologist who graduated from UWA and subsequently trained at Royal Perth Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. This included 6 months in the State Advanced Heart Failure Unit. He furthered his study with subspecialty training in advanced echocardiography including transoesophageal echocardiography at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

 

Dr Kuppusamy has a keen interest in general cardiology (including chest pain and long term risk assessment) in addition to the investigation and management of other cardiac conditions such as arrhythmias, heart failure, valvular heart disease.

 

Dr Kuppusamy is a local trained graduate and has an empathetic approach to his patients with short wait lists currently.
